I've always been wondering and the question became definate after watching Watership Down. What is it with all those birds that add comedy to the (possibly) deepest movies? In NIMH's case I don't think I need to even explain which character I'm refering to ;).
My mother told me that in every film, no matter how serious a character for comedy is necessary. I agree. Although there are several exceptions (like cats and butterflies), for some reason the comedy character seems to be a bird in so many animated films that revolve around smaller creatures.
Do you all agree?

The American Tale movies are an exception. They involve smaller creatures, and the comic relief is not a bird.

comic reliefs are the breaks from an otherwise depresing storie. often they are used as a break from the sadness. guess in some ways they are needed.
