HEY Folks! well, maybe not 'Live' but we are 'alive'... I guess. Long bus/Car rides can leave one pretty zombie like. After 30 hours on the road, I'd say I qualify.

As for the question you're all surely wondering: "Is Simon as uber nifty as he seems on the forums/muck"

The answer: YES! It's a real honor sitting all of.... Three feet from him at this -very- instant of posting! WOOOO HOOOO! X-D

Would you believe I'm really -not- hopped up on caffeine? ;)

Anyway, were all safe and sound, and having a good time. Even better when some of the major events kick off later in the day, and weekend.

Still haven't found Tod, Raganzi and Backwoods, but I'm sure we will! MUAHAHAHAHAHAH!

....oops... did I cackle out loud? lisheepish grinli

Which one are you Xavier?

Whiskers57

02-09-2006 22:03:25

Wow! looks like you guy are having fun at the MFM, the last I`ve seen of a "get to gether" such as this was NIMH-COM 2000, and it was neat to see pics of NIMH fans just hanging, I used all my vacation time from work for real life problems, so if you do not mind a "Buckaroo Banzai" looking cowboy in his 50`s I hope to join in on the fun in the future, you guys have fun and enjoy, I hope later to be a part.

But I am going to a Anime convention in Lancaster CA, just 45 miles away :) .

I'm the one on the far right. I'll let the others identify themselves if they feel inclined to do so. ;)

I know I for one am having a blast. MFM is generally the highlight of my year. All walks of life are welcome at MFM, so i don't think you'd have any problems, Whiskers. It would be very nifty to get more, and new NIMH Muckers, or just NIMH Fans together. This year has the record so far with a reported total of six. Only five of which I have met to this point.

I'll hopefully have all my MFM pics up at some point soon in the future. Debating doing it now while I have access to broadband, but can't really edit them as I would like at MFM.

Whiskers57

03-09-2006 12:54:28

So it`s live from your laptop computer ?, I`m finding out that some motels and hotels have free internet with their rooms, or are you wireless.

Love to see the pics and what you guys did there :) .

Not a moment to soon, we can see you are being forced against your free will to post this,

A rescue party is on the way, what ever you do, try not to have fun (but act like your enjoying it), help is on the way.

We will have you back to your boring life as soon as possible 8)

Simon

04-09-2006 23:12:05

They've got free wireless at the hotel. And I'm afraid it's already over now. <:( Ah well, it was fun while it lasted, and I finally got to meet Xavier, Tod, Backwoods and Raganzi, as well as see Gregg again. n.n Anyway, I do hope to see more people there next year! :)

Xavier

05-09-2006 20:47:52

Well, after 37 hours or so of travel, I'm finally home. I departed Memphis at 9am on the 4th (local time) and arrived home at 10:00pm on the 5th (local time)

I'll hopefully be posting most of the 480 some odd photos I took, after siphering out all the lousy or unusable ones.

Anyway I'm tired. I'll post more tomorrow :)

Backwoods

05-09-2006 22:12:28

Alright, so its not live from the meet, but can you blame me for enjoying myself enough to not sit down long enough to post, or sleep. Ok, so the real reason is that the hotel we were in had no internet connection, though they said they did, so even after we were kicked out of everything, apparently some people still sleep at night (go figure), I couldn't log on.

Anyways absolute blast, been on top of the world ever since I regained consciousness sometime early tuesday morning (monday is still something of a blur), but as far as I was thrown Tod went past to the nth degree plus a bit: I'll let him elaborate should he choose to. Putting it simply, and undervaluing it tremendously, we had fun.

Thanks for the invite. Odds are I'll make an apearance again next year: though planning ahead is a skill I never attained, or had any desire to.

Hurray unpredictability.

BTW: I'm on the left of the photo (for all who care and don't already know). I actually smiled, dang, I even forgot how that looked.

Xavier:
looking forward to those photos, be sure to leave the hilarious photos when you sort through them. Think its been a few minutes since I've busted up laughing, and I'd hate for it to end anytime soon.

Backwoods: fur till I stop lovin it.

I may visit MFM some year. Not sure if I should and can't make any guarantees. I'm not going anytime in the next couple of years because first, I'm busy and have no transportation there. Second, my parents would probably freak out if they found out. Last, I'm not sure if going won't be a mistake for me.

This does sound like it would be a gas, you know, to go to a meet and get to know fans of like mind and meet them for real, for now, I know of no one who is a NIMH fan in the flesh and never been to a fur-meet yet, But mostly on the west coast its anime (Japanese animation), those conventions are nice, But not my main style (tho I do like it also), next year hope to be with you all. :D

There's lots of options in terms of getting to MFM, the first one that comes to mind is Bus. Only down side is the bus terminal is like a $20 taxi ride to the hotel. But you only have to do that twice, so it's not -too- bad. Depending on your proximity, might even be less expensive than you might expect.

However, your comment on your parents freaking confuses me. Why would they freak about you meeting some online friends in an -extremely- public place. 600 like minded people in a hotel does a pretty good job at filling the place up, if you know what I mean. ;)

I honestly thought my first year might wind up a mistake, especially considering the expense involved, for uncertain enjoyment. To say the least, this is my third MFM, and my fourth Furry con total, and there's fewer places I'd rather be. I have Gabriel to thank for talking me into attending the first year. However I still wish it was -slightly- closer. 30 hours of travel time is -not- fun hehe.

From the one Anime convention I attended, and assuming all other anime cons are similar to some extent, they don't hold a candle to MFM. As the con staff put it, MFM is more a "Pizza party that went terribly wrong" and it shows. Another way I like to put it is a family reunion with family and friends you've never met. It's rather extraordinary. At MFM there really is something for everyone.

Perhaps next year, if we get more people, we'll be able to arrange a Secret of NIMH discussion panel, or something. :)

As you should recognize the badge A9, at least according to what Simon has told me. ;) I admit I was rather envious of it. Nice work!!

I know for a fact that I, for one, had a blast! Too bad you couldn't have made it as well. Its going to be hard to beat this record next year. The previous two years running we topped out at four NIMH attendees. This time we had Six! (even if I only met five linarrows eyes at Raganzili hehe)

Just so everyone knows, whoever made it this year, is to try to encourage someone, or to bring another NIMH related friend. Heck, anyone planning to attend in the future should try to do the same! The more the merrier!

Poor, yea I'm there. more and more every day in fact. But hey I've only got one life to live, and I'll either have the money or the time: and more than likely neither.

Hope those that couldn't make it this year manage it next year.

Cedric:
My family has no Idea where I went over the weekend, minor flack recieved for that but I'm not home much anymore, and they likely will never know: or yes they would go nuckin futs: love that bumper sticker.
As far as whether it's a mistake for you or not thats for you to decide, but it is fun, and aint that what life is about.

Long live good times and great company:

My parents are somewhat overprotective of me. And I don't want to know how they'd react if I said "I'm going to a convention in Memphis to see some people I talk to online." They would probably think I'm seeing some convicts or terrorists. Whenever they see me on the MUCK, they ask if I'm talking to you guys about blowing up my school. Even when I finally break free of my parents, I'm not really sure I'd go. Don't think I'd really fit in. I always have some way of sticking out in a crowd.

Nimhster

07-09-2006 17:23:36

I can't do much either because I'm 13! My mom is so afraid of me being on this forum. I keep telling her to calm down and say that everything is fine. She would still say to me, "This forum has MySpace writtin all over it!" :?

Okay, so maybe it might get a little personal but hey, we all need to have some fun some time or later. Maybe in 2 or 3 years, I might come but it depends on what my parents say. ( Of course  ).

MySpace? Ick. I hope not. For one, I'd like to think I moderate this place better, and for another it's a lot smaller. Easier to keep out the riffraff. ;)

I always thought of visiting a convention sometime, but I always either chose against it or because they were always too far away. Plus, they seem so expensive what with the hotels and the entry, my farm sallary(which I rarely get paid for) is just no match for it.

Anyway, hope you are having a great time. By the way, I've always wondered what Furry...or Furry-like conventions were like, they seem to involve a lot of costumes and though I rarely participate I like costumes. What are they like?(Also: Have you guys ever met someone named Shawntae Howard? Just curious, I hear he visits these conventions every now and then.)

Backwoods

07-09-2006 23:49:48

That particular piece of paper left the meet in the hands of a certain packmouse, whom some of you are familiar with: along with what may become the MFM balloon.

Cost can be easily reduced through the use of company: the more the merrier. I know we'll be looking for another room mate or two next year.

Cedric:
No, terrorists here. Jurry is still out on my sanity though. You'll fit in as soon as you stop worryin about fitting in. Just come dead set on having fun: it isn't hard to do, but that helps you get over the nervous initial feeling.

Don't grow old before you have some fun:

Cedric

08-09-2006 17:31:41

I guess you're right Backwoods. But risk taking is dangerous (I just won't mention it). Still, I live in the eastern area of South Carolina, so Memphis should be a day's drive from home, tops. Still, my parents don't even know about this forum and I'm afraid to tell them. Kind of like Nimhster. But I may make up an excuse they may buy. Just want to visit the otside world or something. If I told them I was visiting a furmeet, they may think I'm off to some fancy zoo and tell me to try something closer, like Hollywild. Still, I've got college to look forward to, which may interfere with any possible MFM trips for the next four or five years. Still, if you really think I'll fit in, I may try to get a job, make some dough, and go one year. In a way, I guess it would be a way to see some of the real world.

This is true, to go to an anime convention is nice, but not all fun, anime is a broad subject, like western animation, I get lost in the masses and to commercial for my taste, try to find NIMH friends there

Well I`m still going to Lancaster`s anime convention, Ah heck, it`s the only game in town.

Oh nothing big, me and my brother as kids had a inside joke, and if you spoke about something weird or off subject, the duck would pay, anywho I wrote about the NIMH drinking game, and came back, I thought this is not a good subject.
bad move to fix it in my own way, I think just a bit of editing would have been for the best. :)

I've heard about that game somewhere. One would either have to be really stupid or already partially loaded to want to actually play it. I'm still pondering setting a year for a MFM trip...

At the very least, Gabriel, Simon and I didn't do any drinking games. Not sure about Tod, Backwoods or Raganzi though. ;)

However I had brought, and -almost- played it in a drinking-game fashion. Except everyone involved (Non-NIMH folks) had pretty much already been drinking, so we just played the game instead. ;)

If you're wondering what game it is, it's an previous variant of -THIS-[=http://www.paladone.com/ProductDetails.asp?PCLinkID=974]-THIS- game.

And no, I couldn't talk Simon or Gabriel into playing. Or Tod or Backwoods, for that matter. limutters - "Bunch of pansies" - Muttersli ;)

Hey I wasn't reacting to it -that- much! It doesn't hurt!! I've had bigger shocks from static electricity than I ever have from that game. You guys are just wussies. Here, let me help you with your pink Tu-Tu Backwoods. ;)

I guess this weekend was a testament to how Simon and I can survive on irregular schedules, and long days. The constant activity is pretty much what did me in. That only showed it's head after the weekend had ended, and after I had left the hotel. :)

BTW, have you eaten that box of pixy sticks yet Tod? You know, the person giving them out (a friend of mine) noticed one box had gone missing ;). He's also probably not bringing quite as many next year. Had -wayyy- more than was needed.

In that case, not sure I want to come to MFM at all. I'm weird enough as it is.

MFM, and fur cons in general are the -perfect- places for weird folks to be. It's an occasion when you can let your weirdness out for a breath of fresh air for a weekend. Its rather refreshing! :) I think you should stop trying to figure out whether you should, or shouldn't go, and just go! I think you'll have a blast! I can guarantee you you'll find folks weirder than yourself. After all, that's part of the fun!

Yeah, Xav. I still have the box (and will be sending some up to you shortly) Sadly enough, i was the sensible one at MFM, since Backwoods seemed to be SOO friggin' high on sugar that he was jittery and hyper the ENTIRE TIME. (Okay, maybe it wasn't that bad, but close)

I WILL be going next year, but i think i'll fly instead of drive. 12 hours twice in one weekend was rough.

Thanks Tod. I look forward to maintaining my sugar rush for a -bit- longer. I've been unable to hold off eating the small handfull I have left over. They're just too powerful to resist!!! liWHINES as he's led toward the bliss that is giant pixy stickli ;)

I hope I can make it. At this point I have -no- idea where I'll be. I still owe some folks for -this- year, let alone next year. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for sure. I'd love to see you, Gabriel, Simon and Backwoods again. Perhaps even get to meet Raganzi for the -first- time if he opts to make it again. Plus any other NIMH Folks who care to attend as well.

It seemed to me Backwoods was either exhausted, or high as a kite. It was pretty amusing. On the up side, I get free admission next year, since I broke 15 hours of volunteer work this year. At least that's one cost I don't have to worry about. :)

I wish I could fly. US folks are lucky that they can fly from one end of the country to the other for well under $500. In Canada, just to fly over the border, makes air fare at least $800 - $1000 CAD. -.-

Seems there are a few Nimh fans out this way (west coast)... anyone ever thought of doing a Nimh-con at one of the California fur-cons, like Further Confusion? I'm going this year (well, next year.. January '07) and it'd be awesome to meet some other fans! :D

Umm, unfortunatally, A9, i live on the eastern side of the midwest states, if that makes any sense, and thus, travelling to the west coast is kind of a hassle, not to mention out of my current budget.

As for Raxx Mockan's suggestion, um, when and where? You did say it was 'East' coast, right?

I've no immediate plans to attend FC, but I believe a couple of my western friends attend that con, and I intend to 'some day' in the not-so-near future attend. Maybe then, if nothing has already been arranged, or otherwise established, we could arrange a meet at one of the western, or California cons.

There's a con held in Atlanta Georgia that i know of, called "Furry Weekend Atlanta" which can be found at http://www.furryweekend.com/

I also think there's one in Florida somewhere, although I can't think of the name off the top of my head, or where specifically it is. I'll have to do some research.

Ok, First off I have to admit that MFM was, and will continue to be rated as an absolute blast. The last time I had anywhere near that much fun I had to completely rebuild the suspension on my truck: and that wasn't nearly as long lasting. (probably for the best there)

I, however am not exactly sure I want to answer the question of how many of these cons can I survive in a year: fraid I might end up like my truck.
-Bows his head-
May she rest in pieces.

By the way Just Don't Go is ranking up there with Keep The Truck On The Road at this point.

I have will power, I have will power: F it, no I don't. YEEEEEHHHHAAAAA!!!!!!

Waiting for Tod to say "hey I'm going _____ on _______"
ROAD TRIP!!!!!:
Backwoods

Here is a suggestion Backwoods: Don't imitate the Dukes of Hazzard. These are trained professionals with stunt vehicles. The average Joe is not encouraged to try it on his own.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, Backwoods. I look forward to seeing both you, and Tod again next year. It was fantastic meeting you both. Not sure if I'll be able to make it next year, but I'm going to do my darnedest. One thing I've found is MFM is extremely good for the mind and soul. Perhaps not so much for the body... it has to work hard still. But it's worth it! X-D

I don't think he was actually intending to imitate Dukes of Hazzard. Why anyone would in general in the first place is beyond me. That and from what I have seen of the movie of the same name, some of the 'stunts' were CGI. But anyway, I digress from the topic at hand ;).

I had a good time, though i had to work myself out of a snit at first (long story) Anyhow, i'm sad it's all over with and can't wait for next year. I don't know if i'll be driving down, though. That was a long drive to be doing twice in a weekend. I'll see.

Er...Xavier. The only CG shot in that movie was putting what's-his-name behind the wheel of the General in the last jump. They actually did all those stunts, thougth most of the jumps were done 'unmanned' with a catapult of sorts. (Sorry, i'm being nitpicky.)

Well, flying does make the trip less stressful. Although I always find road trips fun. Maybe it's just me. At least they have a free shuttle from the airport to the hotel. :)

I have seen a clip of at least one 'jump' they did in the movie. Perhaps the initial 'takeoff' was real, but the landing, where the General Lee was coming head on for the camera, was CGI. I'm pretty sensitive to CGI add-ins, and the General Lee in at least -one- landing was CGI. I doubt there was much left of the cars after being launched off a ramp, regardless of the method used.
