Hey guys, recently I had to resurface my NIMH dvd. You know, the DVD version that was produced in 1998. I thought it was a goner till I popped it in last night. While I was watching it, a program I thought I had uninstalled from my Mac popped up interrupting the video. Instant HandBreak is a DVD - iPod Video MPEG-4 ripper. I didn't realize what Instant HandBreak was at the time, because it interupted the film, so I minimized it to the MacOS X dock and continued to watch NIMH.
When I was done watching it, pow! I had an MPEG-4 file on my desktop. I didn't recognize the file name, so I opened it and it was the whole movie with encoded sub-titles.
So now just for the heck of it, I'm watching the movie again through the TV-Out mode of my iPod Video. The quality is a little off when watching it through my TV, because the MPEG-4 file was converted to a smaller resolution for the iPod Video's screen. Still I am seeing now major low resolution artifacts on my TV and most importantly, there seems to be no sign of lack of video-audio synchronization (I hate video not syncing with the audio, that was the first thing I encountered when I started video editing in high school Video Editing courses).
I know what some of you with or without iPod Video's might say, distribute it! Well I'm sorry but I am not going to do that. By law, one can make a backup of something that they already own, provided that they not distribute the back-up either freely or for profit. I suggest that if you want to do as I did (even though I had no idea that it was being rippered by Instant HandBreak  ) then find either a PC program that works like Instant HandBreak or download Instant HandBreak for MacOS X.
Anyway, the DVD now seems to be working just fine all the same.
As mentioned above, i'd recommend that distribution :!: might get people into trouble.

I barely understood a word you said, but you are right not to distribute it. I wouldn't download it anyway with that low quality. I can always get a DVD of NIMH at Wal-Mart for $10. Still, that was an interesting phenomenon.

I need to check again whether they've completed the PC version of handbrake yet. I've found a few apps to rip DVDs to my iPod w/ Video, but nothing stellar thus far. Not for free, anyway.
Of course, I don't really need to 'preserve' any of my DVDs, since they're all more or less in mint condition. I take excellent care of my discs. ;)

As far as Im aware, handbreak is still a Mac OS X only app.

Last I checked, you are correct. Though I believe they were working on a Windows and Linux version as well.

At leas there are a few dedicated multi-platform developers out there willing to port their open source prjects to all three major computer systems.
I was supprised to find handbreak in the first place, let alone pay for another app than can do the same thing.

Yeah it looks like there is a somewhat 'unofficial' build of Handbrake for Windows, found here:

Giving it a download now. Hopefully it'll work nicely.

Good luck, man. You'll need it. I remember the first version I downloaded. It only ripped half of what I was trying to get. The last time I used the previous version it only ripped the first 30 seconds.
