We all know that on June 10, 1987, that Elizabeth Hartman had committed suicide. I was just wondering if I can post here about her.
Here is a picture of her.

I hope everybody has something to say about Elizabeth Hartman.

This is indeed a moving and heartfelt tribute to a fine actress who unfortunately was taken from us before her time. Had she been able to conquer whatever demons were plaguing her and lived, I do not doubt for a moment that she could have gone on to even greater glory in the motion picture industry. Also; I can't help but wonder, had she llved, what would she make of the support and devotion that so many of us here in the NIMH community (myself included) have given to her last and possibly greatest work.

Peace :D

I didn't know she killed herself. She doesn't seem like the type to do it, but here it is in black and white (and blue). So what could have possessed her to do such a thing? Did she predict the creation of NIMH 2? Did she have financial trouble? Or did she not have a positive outlook on life? Or was it something entirely different that drove her to her decision?

I'm sure this is why;

She had been divorced since 1981. In May 1987, she was getting help from a Doctor, but, some how she did not find it helpful.
Weeks had passed and the Doctor had received a call from Elizabeth saying that she was going to kill herself.
The Doctor tried to get there as fast a he could but, she had already done it. From this day on, it has been 19 years now since she had died.

Let me help...

When I was in high school, I scoured the microfilm machines for anything related to the SoN actors. Elizabeth Hartman was one of the few that actually proved an easy task (or at least, easier than Paul Shenar).

She had very deep psychological problems, including (but not limited to) paranoia, anxiety, and depression. These, I believe, largely contributed to the disintegration of her marriage, as well as prematurely ended her life.

Hope that helped,

Megan

I have to say that I`m a bit saddened in seeing those pics, When I first saw "Walking Tall" in 1973 I watched this Elizabeth Hartman, but never knew that in time she would play a role that would steal my heart, and to this day one of the best voiceovers for a mouse, in character of Mrs Brisby.
I always loved that slight shakeness in her voice.
Rest In Peace Elizabeth.
I`m sure she`s looking down and enjoying the fandom of this beautiful movie from a great book, and a little mouse that she helped bring to life. :)

She also had a deteriorating acting career, and relationship problems, from what I heard. She was already in depression when she provided the voice for NIMH, I think. After the film, no one heard anything from her until she jumped off her apartment building.

Too bad she was able to be herself with Mrs. B.'s voice. Jumped off a building, eh? Poor girl. If only she knew how many fans she would have had by now.

Its sad that an excellent actress would commit suicide. I know the pain of suicide all to well because a friend of mine commited suicide on Feb 1st, 2004. It hurts, but the best way to cope is to thnik of the good times and in the case of Elizabeth Hartman we can thank her for providing the voice of one of our beloved nimh characters. :(

Yes, I was living in Toronto and my first roommate was the coolest dude ever! He was from Sweden and wanted to be a Television and Film director, but as it turned out, he took his life. But i'll not get into the details now because it still hurts ever two two - three years after the fact.

No, we were living as students in an apartment complex. The apartment staff have been allowing room and board for college, univertity and trade school students to live there. He commited suicide around 4 in the morning and was rushed to hospital where he later sucumbed to his wounds around noon of the same day.

Around seven in the morning when I got up to go down for breakfast in the lounge, another friend I made there told me the whole thing.

Wow, it just came out of nowhere. I'm very sorry to hear that this has happened. I'm sure he was a very nice man and a good friend too. I feel bad when stuff like that happens.

I've attempted suicide several times before. It never worked for me. If there is a god, he must have something very nasty planned for me to let me live in misery 3/4 of the year. Still, I don't know what's really worth it, suicide or life.

I've had thoughts of suicide when I was younger, but I haven't had it for years now.

Now that I have a third thing to live for and friends to talk to (for now). In short, I won't make another attempt for at least several years, if ever.

Thats good Cedric, do not feel you are alone In my almost 50 years of living, many times I thought this was it, ca`nt take no more and made plans on the easy way out, My roomate who had tirple-bypass heart surgury got sick of my whining, and said "what do you enjoy in life?" all I could say "was animation and aircraft" and I felt dumb for enjoying such things, now it`s ok and I found freinds of like mind on animation sites and forums, life is still not pain free and while in the military overseas in the early 1970`s I saw some horrable stuff, but with the right family of freinds it sure helps.
Thanks fellow NIMH fans for allowing me into this neat world , it is a stress reliever in it`s own :)

I still think video games and Legos are stupid interests that will never get me anywhere in life. But I have learned from experience that a good RP on the muck is a good cure for almost any bad day.

I found this topic a long time ago and wanted to reply to it. However, I was kinda nervous doing so, but I think now is the time to get it all out.

As someone who's been there MANY MANY times, I'll try my best to understand Hartman's situation.

If you were to ask why she did it, the answer is that it was probably a way out of her misery (obviously). For someone who's suffered for as long as she has and sees no end to it, suicide seems to be the only option. The help that she was getting wasn't enough for her.

Now according to interviews and such, she was sitting around in her apartment doing nothing but listening to music and reading. That is the worst thing someone can do to help themselves. Doing nothing with your life makes it worse. You have to have a goal of some kind, something to keep you moving to the next day, or else life's meaningless.

However, while you're depressed, you want to do nothing; in other words, you lack motivation to work. So it's a mental struggle of sorts. I don't know how well psychiatric care was in 1987, but I can tell you today that any psychiatrist would probably agree with what I'm saying.

It's hard for most normal people to understand suicide. They view it as a selfish way out of life that only makes people surrounding the suicide victim miserable. In reality, most people don't commit suicide because they want to, they feel as if they have to. They only see the consequences of continuing living, they don't see the consequences of actually doing the act.

Unfortunately I undertand her situation all to well.
