Domo! Me again (Maybe I'm posting too much. You see, I really love to talk, and none of my friends in school are NIMH fans and this is the only place I can talk about it. )

Okay, here's another random question where I'm asking about your opinion...

What do you think Mrs. Brisby's childhood was like?

liShe was born Elizabeth Cole; the youngest of five children and the only daughter to Susan & Raymond Cole Sr. Elizabeth along with her four brothers William (Bill), Micheal, Samuel, and last but not least, Raymond Jr. (a.k.a. L'il Ray or just Ray-Ray) lived in a hollowed out tree stump near the edge of the woods that bordered the Fitzgibbon farm. Their overall lifestyle though not poor, was far from what one might call opulant. In fact both parents and the children themselves as they got older had to work quite hard in order to eke out a living. As one might suspect, the most important task especially for a family of this size was to find enough food to feed themselves. It was during a foraging expedition when Elizabeth was only two yrs. old (too young to make the trip and thus had to stay home with her mother) that her father was killed by a fox that was also foraging for its supper. Poor Elizabeth was deeply affected by the loss of her father. She often cried herself to sleep only to be awakened in the middle of the night by horrible dreams of being eaten alive by monstrous foxes, bobcats, hawks, etc. When she sought comfort from her mother, she more often than not received none. Perhaps being wrapped up in her own grief and sorrow, she found herself unable to offer a kind word or a soothing touch to her daughter when she needed it most. Sometimes during one of her periods of extreme anxiety, Elizabeth would seek advice from her oldest brother. Bill, as supportive as he was, because of his youth and inexperience would often find himself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of responsibility that was thrust upon him in the wake of his father's death. This meant that despite his best efforts at trying to comfort Elizabeth, he failed miserably. This meant that Elizabeth was often left to her own devices as far as calming herself were concerned. This is what served to shape her personality into what we witnessed on the silver screen. A basically shy/timid individual, but with an undercurrent of determination and courage that rises to the surface when the occasion demands. :x :) :D

I thought I'd bump this one again because I wanted to bring NIMHmaniac's profile of Mrs. B to everyone's attention. Are you sure you haven't done any fan-fics of your own? I haven't delved into her backstory all that much in my stories, and this is about the best-detailed one I've seen yet. o

Thank you David for your kind words of appreciation. In answer to your query as to whether or not I've had any experience with fan-fics, I'm afraid the answer would have to be no. I did use some aspects of my own personality in the creation of her childhood biograph though.

I've also drawn upon my own experiences and aspects of my own personality in writing Mrs. B and other characters in my stories. I've put some of myself in Justin, Mr. Ages and some of my original characters as well.
