Domo! Hi. Well, it's almost exactly three months since I started becoming a NIMH fan. How time flies... However, compared to other people, three months of being a NIMH fan is probably on the short side. That's why I don't know much about the whole thing as much as everybody else does. So, here is my main question...
I started being obbsessed with NIMH when I saw it on the Disney Channel. Along with The Secret NIMH, the next day, another movie was on the air... NIMH 2. I researched about NIMH 2 and found out all of the critisizm and so many fan hating it.
My opinion is that it is okay not to like it. People do have opinions. But here is my opinion. "I don't exactly hate it." Well, there are parts that I dislike about it.
My question is...
Personally, what do you dislike (If some people liked it, what was good about it?) about NIMH 2 the most? I would like it if you can be specific. I want to know what they dislike, and why. Any personal opinions?
What I like about this movie is Timmy and Jenny as characters, the songs (some of them), etc.
What I don't like is the quality of the movie, the cats (Not liking cats is one reason. I HATED Dragon.), and in the Japanese version, and the same thing sort of happened in the first movie, but they keep talking about Johnathan (spelled 'Jonathan' in the sequel) and never show him as a character.
Yoroshiku!

Well, it's been a while since I've seen it, so my perspective might be colored by faulty memory. I personally don't think so, though. This is one of those things I'm not likely to forget. Quite honestly, I even watched it a few times, though I attribute that to just wanting to see something new that was NIMH. Here's my take on it.
The Good
- Timothy's the main character
- Some of the songs/soundtracks are okay, though not spectacular.
- Jenny's actually pretty cool.[/list:u]
The Bad
- What were they thinking?: An annoying caterpillar as a sidekick, Jeremy impersonating the Great Owl, the Rats scavenging human garbage, NIMH as a haunted castle-like thing in the middle of a city, that whole 'Prophesy' bit.
- Although they make Timothy the main character, they completely ruin him /as/ a character. Along with just about everyone else who was in the first film.
- Martin--voiced by Eric Idle, no less--as the evil villain. C'mon, if you're going to do a plot twist, at least make it believable.
- Dr. Valentine - Unless they're /actually/ collecting flying insects, scientists don't use butterfly nets, especially not on mice.
- The two cats, Floyd and Muriel - Oy.[/list:u]
The Ugly

I haven't actually seen the film, but I've heard so many bad things about it that I don't think I ever will. I did read a synopsis and... wellÂ… when I regained consciousness I had to read it again to see if had all been a terrible dream. Unfortunately it was true. However the thing that has really put me off seeing it is the character design. Marcus Lindemann has done a great section on
his website[=http://ntfe.thornvalley.com/]his website about the designs from NIMH 2 and to be blunt they appalled me. The worst is the one Simon has shown above. How could they do that to Cynthia? At what point did they think that would be a great idea? Marcus' site has got bits on the others and it seems Brutus fairs a little better (now he's a moron. Huh, that's funny!) and even the designs that haven't changed much still look awful, and are so many childish scrawls when compared with the original. That put the last nail in the NIMH 2 coffin for me. I think watching it, as well as taking about 80mins out of your life that it would seem you could more enjoyably spend nailing yourself to the ceiling, could potentially take some of the magic out of the original. I've built up quite a loathing for the film without even seeing it I worry that if I should ever take leave of whatever senses I may have had and actually watch this film by accident I may slip into some rage filled alternate dimension. By the sounds of it 'Timmy to the Rescue' sums up everything that is cheap and shoddy about modern cinema 'casi in' culture.
Now if you'll excuse me... I think I have worn out my spleen.

When I first watched it, I was young and didn't really notice the poor animation quality, but I -still- didn't like it. I was really looking forward to watching it, but when I finally did, I was apalled. MGM ruined my favorite characters in every way they could possibly think of.
Going back and recalling the day I watched the movie, I'm not even sure my brain was conscious for the majority of it. My memory starts at the prologue, and cuts out until after 'Timmy' and Jenny have made their 'daring escape from the valley'.
Somehow, it seems they even ruined Jonathan as a character, and he wasn't even in the movie. I mean, it was my understanding he was a martyr, not Zeus.
<sighs and will end rant here>
Much later on, when I started taking more time to look at the artistic side of animation, I noticed a very pronounced difference to say the least. The animation from the movie speaks for itself..
Anyways, that's my opinion.

I've noticed this, but NIMH 2 has a major scene that (as usual, totally in my view!) is quite similar from a Disney movie.
It's the scene where Jeremy's "Wig" gets caught on a tree and all of the animals notice that he's not the Great Owl.
If people notice the Disney scene I am referring to... good.
If not... check " the Jungle Book".
They're both in the end of a song...
What actually happens later on is different, but yup. They're similar.
I've seen on other websites about similar scene similarities from other movies. So this might be one of them. Haha.
Also, kinda surprising, Dick Sebast worked on The Rescuers just like Don Bluth did...

I just loved their reference to "the lost six". I mean, it's bad enough that cynthia's a porker with some weird haircut, but they can't even count? Ouch.
The music was good... comparatively. I would have to agree with some other fans that, while the music was better than some, the shine of SoN was partly in the fact that it "wasn't" a musical.
Jenny has breasts. ... ... And who else??? That was... kind of different.
Also, the differences between the book, "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" and the movie, "The Secret of NIMH" were reconcilable by virtue of their equal goodness. The difference in NIMH 2 and the prequel (book and movie) kinda cast a long shadow over the longtime fans.
I think we "may" not have been so upset with it if it weren't for the fact that we waited a long time for an extension and got... well, Nimh 2. :?
And Martin is a "good" kid. Getting caught by NIMH and transmogrified into Evil Martin was adding insult to injury.
